In this presentation, Dr.  Jeffrey Stern will talk about Kohut and the birth of self psychology, as well as about self psychology since Kohut and its increasingly relational turn. In addition to Kohut’s case material, Dr. Stern will share some of his own and use literature and film excerpts to bring the theory to life. Clips from “The Wizard of Oz," and text from pages of "The Story of Dr. Doolittle" will be used in this way. There will be opportunities for questions and answers throughout.

The goal will be for participants to experience the power, reach and bright spirit of self psychology — arguably the most transformational body of psychoanalytic thought since Freud.

This workshop, presented by Dr. Richard Geist,  will focus on an introduction to major clinical concepts from contemporary Self Psychology and, through the use of verbatim clinical dialogue, study their implications for conducting dynamic psychotherapy. Emphasizing patient centered rather than theory centered treatment, we will focus on implementing an empathic listening stance, responding to resistance and rage, handling selfobject transferences, re-interpreting oedipal development, understanding frustrations and gratifications, and study the meaning and importance of interpretation.

Throughout this clinically oriented workshop will be and emphasis on the impact of the therapist on the treatment process.
