General Information

Join us at the annual IAPSP conference to be held in Baltimore, Maryland on October 23-26, 2008. The topic is Self Psychology Explores The Development of Individuality. Self psychology began with an exploration of self structure, moved via empathy to a focus on selfobject experience, and came to a full appreciation of the importance of intersubjectivity. The question we explore in four panels is: given the power of intersubjectivity, how do we help our patients achieve an increasing capacity for individuality?

Panel 1 will reconsider the self system as it resides in the dyadic, triadic, ancestral, and cultural systems. Panel 2 uses an adult case to explore how analysis can enhance both the analysand's individuality and their intersubjective realm. Panel 3 uses a child case for similar exploration. Panel 4 depicts achieving individuality through creativity and/or leadership via presentations of psychobiographic studies. All conference participants will have an opportunity to further their own inquiry in post-panel discussion groups.

Our immediate past president, James Fosshage will present the Kohut Memorial lecture. In addition we will have individual paper sessions and workshops.

The pre-conference program is designed to mirror the main program and therefore serve as a preparation for those who attend. An introductory course will take up the basic tenets of self psychology. Another course will consider how intersubjectivity and the relational perspectives regard the development of individuality. Another course will employ motivational systems theory to consider the complexity inherent in individuality. Another course will use biographic studies to explore the interplay of creativity and individuality. Another course will take up innovations that affect Brain and Self. The balance in couples therapy between an intersubjective realm and the realm of individuality will complete our preconference courses. I hope that all of this intellectual fare plus the welcome of our ICP&P local hosts plus the famous food and museums of Baltimore will entice you to share in this occasion.

2008 Planning Committee Members: Ronald Bodansky, PhD; Lucyann Carlton, JD, PsyD; Paula Fuqua, PhD; Frank Lachmann, PhD; Rosemary Segalla, PhD; and Estelle Shane, PhD.
